Understanding Vicious Stock Cycles

When investing in stocks it is important to monitor the stocks to determine whether it is performing as anticipated. Remember that the stock market is as unpredictable as a storm. Analysing the market is an art, not a science. That is why analysts tell investors, ‘When in doubt, get out.”

Bull

It is hard to get out when in a bull market. The bull trap is where a stock lifts, falls back, continue to decline and then hits to new lows. This action, leaves the stock holders with losses.

When the market climbs, investors are encouraged. They watch it drop, expecting it to climb again. In many cases, if the stock dropped, excited investors will buy up. In many cases they are laughing at the losers who sold out before the big boom. This new ‘artificial’ boost drives the prices up a bit, encouraging the investor. This creates a situation where any small profit the aggressive investors hoped to harvest are eaten up in their anticipation of big gains.

These investors usually do not have an ‘exit scheme’. They have no pre determined, written in stone, strategy for when they will sell a stock. They flounder for too long before they realize their mistake. By then, it is too late.

Bear

The bear trap is the opposite of the bull trap. The stock breaks down through the support level. It looks like it will never hit bottom. The stock suddenly shoots up. It is almost a miracle that the stock is flying.

Investors who were hoping to profit from by selling short are 'trapped' and suffer losses as the stock shoots up.

The bear trap can leads to an upward move. This is an artificial surge fed by the number of buyers competing to buy the ‘hot stock.’ The buyers become aggressive feeding the market, and bringing in the novice ‘get rich quick’ crowd.

They see the surge and are attracted to the quick profits, which deplete the supply. Once the supply runs out, the entire house of cards comes toppling down.

Real investors do not touch the stocks. Everyone wants to sell, but no one wants to buy.

Vicious Cycles

These vicious traps play out painfully for investors on the wrong side of the market. Aggressive traders are pulled in easily. They need to watch for the ‘setups’ selling on the right day makes the difference between large profits or devastating losses.

These traps can change within hour. They are common, which is why many investors are warned to stay away from ‘hot stocks.’ Unfortunately, it is fairly easy for market specialists to manipulate stocks on a short-term basis. The patterns, or false patterns, are easy to pick out if investors listen to the market.

And, the victims of these traps are usually emotional and excitable investors who do not watch for the red flags and do not have a solid exit plan. Experienced stock traders get out as soon as they realize they were caught in a trap. This is the only way to minimise losses.

Familiarizing Commonly Used Stock Market Terminologies

The stock market is a great arena for people to make a lot of money, however, for many beginners, all the hustle and bustle of stock trading may cause a lot of confusion, especially if you are not familiar with the many terms and tactics used for negotiations.

If you are a beginner in the stocks game, make sure that you familiarize and educate yourself well on stock trading knowledge. You can of course, start off by widening your vocabulary. Here are a few terms that you may need to familiarize:

Stocks

Stocks are probably the most important and common items traded in the stock market. These are actually shares of certain companies, which are publicly sold and traded.

Whenever people buy a portion of stock in a particular company, this means that they acquire a share of ownership and investing in that specific business. Through this, a stockholder is given certain rights towards the company such as a vote in stockholder meetings as well as his or her financial share from the company’s earnings.

Broker

A stockbroker is the person who handles the actual trading of stocks. He or she does the negotiations to buy and sell the stocks in behalf of the investors and the companies involved. The many various types of brokers may include full-service, online, auto-trade and discount brokers.

Bull Market

A bull market is a market that manifests a continuous increase in the value of its stocks as well as a steady growth. Generally, with this type of market, investors gain an optimistic attitude and may want to buy more rather than sell stocks.

Bear Market

Bear markets mainly characterize significant losses and declines in a particular market. With this type of behavior among stocks, most investors would generally want to sell more of their stocks and may be pessimistic about investing.

Dividends

Dividends are added or bonus payments given to stockholders after a profitable quarter. With this sum of money, many people may often reinvest on more shares of stock, which allows individuals to earn so much.

Futures

Futures, just like stocks, are also traded in the market. However, these are purchased against future costs of commodities. You can earn from these, if in time, the actual price of commodities become higher than what you paid for the futures. On the other hand, you can also lose money if the price becomes lower that what you paid for.

Day Trader

A day trader is the person who buys and sells stocks aggressively in one day. Usually, he or she does this for several times each day in order to make quite a few small profits within the day.

Trading on Margin

Trading on margin may be similar to trading stocks with the use of borrowed money. Through this, you can purchase shares of stock for only a portion of the actual price. The remainder of the cost can be paid upon the actual sale of the particular stock, or on a later date.

These terms are only a few of the most commonly used language in stock trading. And upon encountering them, you may certainly have the impression of how intimidating the stock market can get. With the many complicated terminologies and tactics, you may easily get backtracked if you do not know enough about what you are dealing with.

Remember that if you are new at doing business in this arena, make sure that you take the extra mile to learn more about more terms as well as strategies on how you can best maximize profit. A little hard work will certainly get you far, and one of these days you will realize how all of this can pay off.

Stock market guide

Stock market is an inquisitive place for many. It is because the place has given birth to many millionaires and is also responsible for turning millionaires to locals. Thus the bulls and bears have always been charismatic. Now millions of people invest in the stock market to make good money. The aura of the place is such that it is swarming with people any hour of the day and any season of the year. But only few know that how the stock market came into existence or what actually are its origins.

A short encounter with the past

The oldest stock certificate was issued in favor of a Dutch company in 1606. The purpose of this company was to benefit from the spice trade between India and the Far East. During the 18th and the 19th centuries the trade of spices drifted to England when Napoleon reigned over the place. With the development of United States of America as a colony to British and Alexander Hamilton (the first US secretary of the Treasury) flourished the American Stock Exchange. Hamilton played a crucial role in encouraging the trading in the Wall Street and Broad Street in New York. The New York Stock and Exchange Board now popularly known as the New York Stock Exchange was organized by the traders of New York in 1817 when trade and commerce bloomed there.

A precise survey of the Western stock market

• The Wall Street- a place where the whole of 18th century trade and commerce took place, Wall Street is a recognized place across the globe. The street was termed as Wall Street since it ran alongside a wall that was taken as the northern boundary of New Amsterdam in 17th century.

The Wall Street is known for the J.P. Morgan’s million dollar merger that created US Steel Corporation, the ruinous crisis that resulted in Great Depression and the “Black Monday” of 1987.

• The NYSE or the New York Stock Exchange is perhaps the foremost and so the oldest stock exchange in United States that is believed to be born in 1792. The significant aspects related to NYSE include the Buttonwood Agreement when 24 stockbrokers and traders of New York signed this accord and established the New York Stock Exchange and Securities Board which is now recognized as the NYSE; the considerable swings that the NYSE saw during the 20th and 21st century; the hitting of the 100 and later even 1000 mark by the Dow around 1971 and the mark of 10,000 that the Dow scaled in 1999.

• NASDAQ is the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Questions. It is an apparent or virtual stock market where all trading is done through the electronic media. NASDAQ, the global and the largest electronic stock market today was first established in 1971 in United States at the time when computers were not as developed as they are today and it was very difficult to compute. The main exchange of NASDAQ is in United Sates while its branches can be found in Canada and Japan and it is also linked to markets of Hong Kong and Europe. NASDAQ functions by purchasing and selling the over- the- counter or OTC stocks.

• AMEX-was discovered in 1842. The putative father of the institution is Edward Mc Cormick (the commissioner of SEC) who endowed it with its current name. It started its journey as the New York Curb Exchange and its name is factual. The AMEX in contrast to the NYSE operates with the small and more dynamic companies some of which even make it to the NYSE board.

Of Stocks, Stockholders And Stock Market

A copper mining enterprise Stora Kopparberg first introduced the system of stock in the 13th century. The financial backers and owners felt the need to raise money for investment in the new projects of the same company so they started the method of stock and shares. It was also required in order to ward off the threat to the ownership rights if the company was sold, which would mean complete loss of control.

The investors got the monetary support they were looking for and at the same time solved ownership issues in case the company was sold by granting stocks to the people. Plus, they sold a part to people and still retained control over the company. Thus, the owner had some portion of the assets, some power to make decision conditionally. In return, they shared a part of the profit with the stockowner as dividend.

Financially, stock implies the ownership or share in a corporation. It gives the stockowner the right to claim a share in the assets and income of the corporation. The two types of stocks, preferred and common differ in many respects. The common stock owners can vote at the shareholders' meetings whereas the preferred stockowners cannot vote. Common stockowners get dividends declared by the company, whereas preferred stock owners have higher claim in assets and income of the company. Preferred stock entitles the owner to have his dividends earlier than the common stock owner. Preferred stock owner gets the priority when the company goes bankrupt. Besides these two, the other types of stock are dual class shares and treasury stock.

A stockowner is not liable to losses in case the company closes and has loans to pay back. The loss of the stockholders is limited to the money that would have been made by converting the assets into cash since all the money would be used to repay the loans to the creditors.

A stock exchange is the place where trading of shares is carried out. Individuals and companies sell and purchase shares on a large scale. Generally, a particular company trades only in one specific market and is said to be on the list of that particular stock exchange. However, big multinational companies can be listed on many stock exchanges. This is called inter-listed shares.

There are various methods to buy or sell finance stocks, but the commonest among them is through the mediator called stockbroker, who actually transfers the shares from one owner to another. Stocks can be bought directly from the company also.

The stock market of a country is an indicator of its economy, which just goes to show the growth and power of the stock market.

The Stock Market: The Greatest Show on Earth

The Stock Market is like a day at the horse races, the state fair, and the gorilla exhibit rolled into one event. Nearly each hour of each day with the exception of some holidays the Stock Market is open somewhere in the world.

The currency traders are the vampires of the Stock Market. Their work day begins in the wee hours of the night and ends often times at the break of dawn. The commodity traders check headlines all over the world in order to determine how the volatile futures market is going to play out for the day. If there is a natural disaster that impacts a commodity the commodity trader needs to take note. The commodity trader needs to factor in significant and sometimes obscure news events that may spur on or decrease the availability of a commodity. The commodity trader is a news junkie.

The greatest show on earth takes place on the trading floor. Orders come in and traders in the center stage often times called the pit place the orders in between collecting their thoughts and barking back to to the other performers. It is an amazing feat considering the onerous task at hand and the surrounding circumstances. On some days some traders would rather confront the ferocious lion than a day on the trading floor.

In the background unseen by the crowds is the order makers. The select members of the stock exchanges that have the privilege of front row seats, but prefer the private box seats. The stock broker and mega buck investor who can shift the mood of the day by a single block of buys or sells. The strategic player who can play the upside and the down side of any news event or rumor and keeps the crowds coming back each day.

The stock analysts who determine based on graphs, moving averages and mathematical formulas the strategy for their investors. The analyst takes into account not only market news, but the probabilities of certain events impact on a unit or the entire market. The analyst is in many ways like the fortune teller at the circus with a crystal ball armed with a Hewlett-Packard hand calculator.

The show would not be complete without the critics. The clever and knowledgeable group of commentators and writers who explain or elaborate on the days events. It is similar to the play by play announcer at a Jai Alai game The ball sometimes travels faster than the words can be uttered from any human form of speech. This could explain why stock market commentators speak in fast forward fashion.

The Stock Market is the greatest show on earth and this can be explained by the very human trait of enjoying the art of the trade. It is the present day version of a day in the square with all of the smells, color and fanfare of a carnival where people communicate and come together to sell their wares. The Stock Market provides that ingredient of human existence that enjoys watching or participating in a good trade. .

A Brief History Of The Stock Market

A stock is a legal symbol of ownership in a business. When you buy stock, you are actually buying part-ownership of the business. In other words, you become a shareholder. A business will typically spread ownership to hundreds or even thousands of shareholders. Shares are sold when the company wishes to get cash. In a small business, it may be said that the owner has 100% of all shares. However, when a business grows beyond a certain size, it may require capital for expansion and selling shares is the easiest way to do that.

Most stock holders do not really have much say in how the business is run because their ownership proportion is negligible. In order to make a difference, you must own lots of shares or you must work with several smaller shareholders. Now days, buying stock has become more of an investment rather than trying to run the business. You simply buy stock and wait for the company to grow. This will appreciate the stock value and you make money by selling it. Or you could simply make do with the percentage of profits the company gives you based on your shares.

The stock exchange is the place where people trade stocks. The three important share markets in the United States are the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, and Nasdaq. Stocks are bought and sold through stock brokers or Direct Investment and Dividend Reinvestment Plans. The plans allow you to purchase the stock directly from the companies instead of the market.

Wall Street is a famous and important place when it comes to the American stock market. The street is named after the high fence built by the Dutch settlers in New York during the 17th century. Though the fence lasted till 1685, the street next to it was permanently named Wall Street. The history of the American stock exchange begins in Philadelphia. The first stock exchange was built here in 1770. Two years later, the first New York stock exchange was opened, though it was less successful. In 1817, New York stock exchange representatives traveled to Philadelphia to understand why it was more active.

This created a more disciplined and formal New York Stock and Exchange Board. Another important point in this history is the crash of 1929. This crash triggered the Great Depression.

Advantages Of Forex Trading

Forex Trading has many advantages as compared to stock or equity trading. Due to the current uncertainty of the stock market, many stock or equity traders are now thinking to trade the Forex market. Their main question and concerned was why trade the Forex market? What are the advantages of the Forex market as compared to the stock market? In this article, I will go through some of the advantages of Forex Trading.

24 Hour Global Market - The Forex market is truly a 24 Hour Global Market opens from Monday to Friday. The Forex market starts each trading day from Sydney, Tokyo, London, and finally to New York. Regardless of whether it is in the day or night, there are always market participants actively trading the Forex market. Forex traders can respond very quickly to any currency fluctuations or breaking news immediately unlike the stock and future market. The ECN's (Electronic Communication Networks) in stock and future market are relatively new products derived as an after hours extension to the regular trading hours. Many of these ECN's have ill liquidity and there is no guarantee that a trade will be executed, or at a fair price. Usually, stock or future market traders would have to wait until the real market opens the next morning in order to execute a trade at fair value.

Liquidity – The Forex market is the largest and most liquid market in the world. According to a survey conducted by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in April 2007, average daily trading volume for the Forex market reached an all-time record high of US$3.2 Trillion. A 71% increase from US$1.9 Trillion that was traded in April 2004. This increase is due mainly to the participation of retail investors utilizing broker’s electronic trading platform. This tremendous turnover is more than all the world’s stock markets combined on any given day. With a daily trading volume larger than all stock market combined, this will ensure price stability. With such liquidity, Forex Trader can open or close a position without much difficulty and most importantly, will receive a fair market price.

Opportunity to Make Money in Both Direction – There is no such thing as “bull” or “bear” market in Forex. In Forex, it is of no concern whether the economy is booming or in a recession. For stock trading, profits are usually made when the economy is booming. But we all know that the economic cycle is cyclical – all things that go up must come down. This is not the case in Forex market. Regardless of how major economies are performing, currency exchange rates are always fluctuating, and this in turn will provide trading opportunity for traders to gain profit.

Simplicity – There are not many major currency pairs traded on the Forex market. Therefore, traders may have a better feel of price movement patterns and behavior. Where as in the stock market, there is literally thousands of stock to monitor and it is not easy to follow so many of them.

Small Trading Capital with High Profit Potential – Nowadays, the minimum amount needed to open a trading account is less than $300. Due to competition, some brokers may even accept much lesser amount. In Forex market, this small trading amount could potentially earn hundreds of dollars per week. In stock market, this may not be possible. Of course both market have potential to lose as well, but in the Forex market, traders can make good money with much lesser trading capital.

High Leverage of 100:1 - 100:1 leverage is commonly available from online Forex brokers. This is substantially exceeds the common 2:1 margin offered by equity brokers, and 15:1 in the futures market. Some brokers even offer higher leverage of 100:1. However, it is important to remember that while this type of leverage allows investors to maximize their profit potential, the potential for loss is equally great. Leverage is a double-edged sword and necessitates the use of proper money management. Without proper risk management, this high degree of leverage cans also lead to big losses as well as gains.

Demo Account – Forex Trading has a unique feature called “Demo Account” or simulate account. This “Demo Account” allows the trader to trade using real-time price on the broker’s trading platform with the exact interface and function as a real account. With this simulated account, Forex trader could gain real market experience in trading without risking any capital.

With Forex Trading unique advantages, its of little wonder that more and more retail investors are participating in the Forex market utilizing broker’s electronic trading platform that are widely and easily available.
